How to Make Distance Learning Feel More Like In-Person Learning

Teacher and Student

COVID has everyone missing their loved ones and in-person interaction. Our students are missing seeing their teachers and peers. They are missing the normal school day. While distance learning is probably going to be a thing for a while, there are ways to help give your students the personal connection that they crave. Let’s take a look at how to make distance learning feel more like in-person learning.

A Friendly Greeting

One of the best ways you can start class and make it feel like in-person learning is to greet your students when they show up in your digital classroom. You can do this by greeting the class as a whole or by individually saying hi to each of your students. By starting class with a friendly greeting, it makes virtual learning feel more authentic and connected.

Ask Your Students How They are Doing

Distance learning can make students and teachers feel disconnected from each other. When you get the chance, check in with your students and ask them how they are doing. It helps build a connection with your students and helps build trust between you both.

Have Class Discussions

Just lecturing during the whole class period bores students. They will often lose concentration and start to direct their attention somewhere else. In the pre-COVID classroom, discussions happened frequently. Make sure to still encourage these even though they now have to be over a video conferencing tool.

Have Group Work

When students have to work in a group, it gives them a chance to connect with other students. Develop ways to include group work in your lessons. Your students will thank you.

Utilize Breakout Rooms

Platforms like Zoom allow you to utilize breakout rooms. These rooms help facilitate the group work that we talked about above. They can also be a way for students to just chat and catch up.

Send Encouraging Messages

A lot of students are missing the encouragement that they get from their teachers in the physical classroom. Make a point to encourage your students when they are working hard. Netop Vision, a classroom management software, allows you to send individual messages directly to your students’ computers. This send a message tool is an easy way to send a quick encouraging message to your students.

Celebrate Holidays

Students love celebrating holidays during school. While you can’t have a holiday party with everyone in the same room, you can celebrate with your students virtually. You can watch movies and play games all within the safety of a virtual environment.

Wish Them Happy Birthdays

Our students are hating being quarantined because of COVID. They miss their friends and family. Birthdays during COVID hit them especially hard. Make sure to wish your students a happy birthday and encourage their peers to do the same.
