NetOp School enables our lecturers to get their ideas across more effectively

Needing tools to assist lecturers in their teaching and to control computer-labs, Singapore Polytechnic considered several different solutions. Their choice fell on NetOp School, which has now been installed on more than 2.000 student PCs and in 70 computer labs across the campus.

Singapore Polytechnic, the first polytechnic to be established in Singapore some 47 years ago has provided education and training for more than 100,000 skilled personnel many of whom are now leading entrepreneurs and professionals in industries and businesses in Singapore and beyond.

Today, its 19,000 full-time and part-time students are doing a total of 43 diplomas and post-diplomas in engineering, business, computing, maritime studies, technology, optometry and multimedia. Singapore Polytechnic also offers courses in e-commerce and recently launched an e-learning portal.

Singapore Polytechnic relies heavily on State-Of-the-Art information technologies to educate and train its students. The ICT computer laboratories are therefore equipped with the latest hardware and software. All labs are connected via the Local Area Network, and have Internet access.

The teacher controls - the technology supports
NetOp School is installed in more than 2,000 student Desktop PCs (or 70 computer laboratories) that are spread all over campus. These computer laboratories are used by lecturers to conduct their lessons and by students to gain hands-on knowledge of software applications. All the PCs that have NetOp School installed run on the Windows NT 4.0 Operating System with Windows NT 4.0 backend servers. The PCs are connected to the Internet through the server.

Vincent Oh Keng Heo, Technical Supervisor at Singapore Polytechnic, says: »When Singapore Polytechnic was looking for a tool to assist the lecturers during lessons and in controlling the activities in the computer lab, it considered two types of solutions. The choice fell on the NetOp School software due to its flexibility and better upgrade path. In addition, the advanced remote control software met the requirements of Singapore Polytechnicat a competitive price.«

Vincent Oh Keng Heo continues: »NetOp School enables lecturers to capture student attention by demonstrating the application steps directly on the student’s PC monitor. The attention function in NetOp School is very useful as the lecturer can flash the attention message on the student’s PC and disable students from using the mouse and keyboard. Students too excited during a tutorial session will then have no option but to pay attention to their lecturers.«

Interesting new features
Vincent Oh Keng Heo: »We have seen the NetOp School version 2.0 and are impressed by the new features that are incorporated. We find the new way of displaying the classroom PCs and the file distribution to be two of the most interesting features in NetOp School 2.0.«
